It’s hard for me to get away on a real vacation, but during Spring Break, which just so happened to fall on my birthday week, I took my husband and both boys to Lake San Marcos, where we spent a few days at the Lakehouse Resort & Spa.
Lakehouse Resort & Spa in San Marcos
Less than a half hour drive and without having to jump on the highway, we headed out there on Easter Sunday and arrived when the weather was still warm and there were plenty of boats on the water to entice us to put our name in to reserve a spot on the lake, too.
Lake San Marcos Marina
We ended up renting a pontoon boat for an hour cruise down the lake. It was quiet on the water, with the exception of our music, which we were able to plug into the speakers for a small house boat party which provided plenty of room for the boys to run around, dance and each have seats of their own where they could spread out and lay down.
They each also took turns driving the boat, which was fun to watch. I can imagine they’ll be spending much more time on the lake in Minnesota this summer when we head home to visit family.
From kayaks and pedal boats, to paddleboards and fishing boats, there were so many water activities to choose from which would keep any family engaging in fun lake activities. The best part of the Lake San Marcos Marina is that it is available to anyone, not just those staying at the resort. You can even make reservations for the water activities online so you can simply show up and get started.
The boys had a fun time splashing in the pool…there were two pools and two jacuzzis along with the option to order food and eat outside while we were there. There was also a small shop next to the lobby and alongside the pool area stocked with snacks and ice cream, which is an ideal treat for any vacation with kids.
A few times throughout our weekend stay, we took the boys down to the lobby to play some of the board games that were available. Clue, Life, Trivial Pursuit and a fun bookshelf with a small library and a few TVs and comfortable couches made this seem like a bonus living room to enjoy while we were there.
Lakeside Lounge
Our room was right overlooking the lake in the closest building to the marina, which was perfect. We were able to watch a few paddle boarders get started and looked on as the boats took off and came in for the night, encouraging us even more to get down there to spend more time on the water.
We had two queen beds to share and a small kitchen with a mini fridge that was the perfect size for us to be able to stock it up with snacks and drinks to enjoy during our stay. The one complaint I did have about the resort was that the hotel restaurant was not connected to the hotel. It was part of the golf course, which was a few blocks away. They’re building a new restaurant now that will be located right next to the hotel so we definitely plan to go back and stay again once that construction is complete.
Lakehouse Resort Cottages
Besides the lakeside rooms, there are also private cottages available that include two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full size refrigerator and ample dining space along with two patios and dedicated parking. If I had to do it all over again, I would definitely go this route.
San Diego Spring Break Staycation
This was our first time having to share a small hotel room with both boys and I wasn’t quite prepared for how cramped it would seem when we all tried to quiet down for the night. Since our youngest goes to bed earlier than the rest of us, we had to turn the lights and volume down so we could get him to sleep and the single room didn’t really provide us with the privacy we would have liked.
Traveling with kids is something we’re used to, but the cottages at the Lakehouse Resort are definitely something I will invest in next time. Two bedrooms and more room to spread out is an ideal way to enjoy a San Diego Spring Break Staycation, but I would do it again at the Lakehouse Resort knowing how close and convenient it was.
Both of my boys had a blast, in fact, we had been there for just a few hours when my oldest son thanked me for taking him there and asking if we could come back again.
Staycation success!
Spa Treatment at Lakehouse Resort
Another thing I’ll want to take advantage of next time we visit are the spa treatments. The resort has professional massage therapists who offer facials, massages, body treatments, yoga, fitness services and complete spa packages from the comfort of your private room.
Whether you’re flying into the area and want a quiet lakeside retreat, or are seeking a getaway without having to travel too far, the Lakehouse Resort & Spa is a relaxing place to play on Lake San Marcos.
